Shipley Do-Nuts is an American doughnut chain with more than 300 franchised stores in the Southern United States, including Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama. Its headquarters are located in Northside, Houston, Texas.
Shipley Do-nuts was created when Lawrence Shipley, Sr. designed a gourmet recipe for doughnuts. Back in 1936, when Shipley first created the recipe, his doughnuts were cut by hand and served warm during the day. Back then, his doughnuts were sold for $.05 per dozen. Lawrence Shipley Sr., Lillie Shipley and Helen Shipley worked with others at their original bakery on 1417 Crockett Street in Houston, Texas. In the 1940's, the doughnuts became such a hit around the area that they were sold on retail and thus, Shipley Do-nuts was born. Shipley's goal was to continue selling hot doughnuts to customers. He said "When they bite into that hot doughnut, it will bring them back every time".

History
Lawrence Shipley Jr. took over the business to continue his father's dream. Later, Lawrence W. Shipley, III, became the president of the company and carries on the tradition with high hopes of expanding the chain. In total, the doughnut shop has gone through three generations on Shipley men. Today, the chain's headquarters remain in Houston, Texas on 5200 North Main.
In 2015, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), an agency that regulates the rights of employees in America, charged Shipley Do-nuts for violating federal anti-discrimination laws. The franchise forced Brooke S. Foley, an employee at one branch of Shipley Do-nuts in the Katy area, to take an unpaid leave. This specific branch's owner and general manager prohibited Foley from working at the doughnut shop unless she provided documentation from a doctor that her pregnancy is not "high-risk". Foley was later fired from the shop when she was unable to provide formal evidence of the doctor's permission. This issue violates Title VII of the Civil Right Act of 1964 under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act that discourages pregnancy-related job discrimination. Employers cannot force a pregnant employee to show formal documentation in order to stay employed. On November 16, 2015, Judge Alfred H. Bennett signed the consent decree that settled the suit which provided non-monetary relief. Shipley Do-nuts was required to execute non-discrimination policies, post all anti-discrimination notices in their locations, and keep reports of employment actions that involve pregnant workers.
In April 2017, a lawsuit against Shipley Do-nuts regarding the issue that their employees were not getting the overtime pay that they deserved. The suit alleged that, "All plaintiffs regularly worked over forty hours per week...Shipley's knew or reasonably should have known that plaintiffs worked in excess of forty hours per workweek". One employee, Juan Sanchez, recorded that he worked 40-60 hours in a week with minimal breaks. However, he believes that Shipley Do-nuts disregarded the overage and paid him only 40 hours worth. The suit filed claims that Shipley Do-nuts did not maintain accurate records, failed to pay workers minimum wage, and dismissed the idea to pay overtime. Shipley Do-nuts stated, "the claims by the former employees named in the lawsuit are unfounded, completely without merit and no more than a retaliation lawsuit against Shipley Do-Nuts and Lawrence Shipley III for their recent termination."
On April 22, 2017, Shipley Do-nuts hosted their third annual "Shipley Do-nut Dash". The event raised funds to end hunger among pre-schoolers living in poverty in Houston, Texas. The funds will be used for a Meals-on-Wheels program. The dash's course is about a 2 mile long doughnut themed obstacle course. The event took place at 2202 Dallas Street in Houston and went from 9 A.M. to noon.

Shipley Do-nuts is supplied by Kookla Inc., a producer and supplier of several bakeries, primarily doughnut shops. Shipley Do-nuts sells different types of doughnuts, pastries, and kolaches. Kolaches are a popular pastry that originated in Central Europe. This pastry is well known by Texans for its soft, fluffy dough that wraps around a savory sausage. They may include cheese or jalapenos on the inside.
The classic Shipley glazed doughnut and chocolate glazed doughnut can be purchased for $.99 cents each or $7.89 per dozen. The doughnuts are packaged in either a white paper bag (if sold individually), or in a Shipley Do-nuts box (for the dozen) where the doughnuts are placed on their side over a thin paper to prevent the icing from making contact with the box. The glazed doughnuts (both classic and chocolate), doughnut holes, and beignets -- a French pastry made of deep-fried dough -- are considered the most popular products sold by Shipley Do-nuts. Other products sold include chocolate iced, white iced, maple iced, cherry/red iced, strawberry iced, orange iced, coconut iced, chocolate iced nut, cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, oreo cookie, white sprinkled, pink sprinkled, and chocolate sprinkled. These doughnuts are sold for $1.09 each or $8.49 per dozen.
Cake doughnuts are also available in blueberry and buttermilk. In addition, cinnamon rolls, Butterfly Rolls, Apple Fritters, Filled Bars, Cinnamon Twists, Iced Nut Rolls, and Donut holes are also freshly baked and readily available according to multiple customers. The selection for kolaches are as followed: the Big Earl Sausage and Cheese (regular and jalapeno), traditional sausage, ham and cheese, and sausage and cheese.
Locations
The family-owned chain continues to expand. Although the chain originated in Houston, Texas, the name spreads as far as Colorado Springs. By 2018, Shipley Do-nuts plans to have 58 franchised locations in Colorado. The company is known for its flexible location as it can be attached in shopping strip centers or as a free-standing location. Shipley Do-nuts locations spread all over the south and mid-west region.
Specials/Promotions
National Donut Day is celebrated in June every year. This national holiday was created by Salvation Army in 1938 in honor of those who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. Giving back Shipley Do-nuts donates a portion of their sales from National Donut Day to Salvation Army. Customers who visit between 5 am to noon receive one free glazed doughnut with their purchase.
In 2014, participating locations featured "Dozen Days of Do-nuts" which was a June promotion where customers were given one free glazed doughnut with every purchase that was made on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday in June between 5 A.M. to noon.
